This session did
not go well mainly because the papers that were presented were rather academic
and had no direct relevance to advisory services. Farmers actually complained
that the papers were not relevant to their needs – and there was not discussion
on them.
However, the
first presentation had raised debate on how the market issues should be
addressed.
State
of the art
Marketing boards
had been found to be ineffective in many countries mainly because of
corruption. They seemed to be working reasonably well in Botswana because of
the country’s zero tolerance on corruption.
Interesting
innovations
Informally,
Kenya was said to have some alternative market arrangements that seem be
working better than the old marketing boards. It should be worth learning from
these.
